Transforming a 1950's Ranch

At Julie Anne Interiors, we take immense pride in our ability to transform spaces into dream homes that reflect our clients' unique personalities and lifestyles. Today, we’re excited to share a behind-the-scenes look at one of our recent projects: a classic 1950's ranch. To give you an insider’s perspective, we sat down with our wonderful client, Kelsey, who graciously shared her experience working with us. For this project, Julie Anne Interiors provided Interiors provided Interior Deisgn help on a consutlation basis. This allowed our client to keep costs down while still getting professional Interior Design support throughout the project.

The Vision: Breathing New Life into a Classic

Julie Anne Interiors (JAI): Kelsey, how did you envision the space before you started? Has that changed at all?

Kelsey: We were originally going to keep the floor plan the same and do mainly cosmetic fixes such as new bathrooms, new kitchen and new floors and trim. We were maybe going to knock down the wall between the kitchen and living room and that’s it. We ended up completely changing the floor plan, adding an en-suite master bath, moving closets - the only original walls are the 4 exterior walls. It was a lot more work but it has really elevated the space.

JAI: What’s been the hardest part of the renovation?

Kelsey: So many decisions! We didn’t realize how many small decisions we have to make in terms of tiles, light fixtures, colors, mirrors, bathroom accessories like towel racks, doors, hinges, etc etc. It’s never ending!

Another one is being our own general contractor and having to find good vendors, get bids, handle scheduling and manage it all ourselves. This helped us save money though so it was worth it.

JAI: What’s your favorite part (so far) of the space?

Kelsey: Our favorite part is the open concept main living space. We blew out the kitchen wall, blew out the ceiling and made it raised with gorgeous wood beams from southern Colorado. It really opens up the space and makes it feel larger and incorporates natural elements which is something we really wanted to do in the house. We also love the en-suite master bath, the colors and design are so unique and something we wouldn’t have been able to think of without an interior designer’s help and vision.

JAI: What are you most excited for when you move in?

Kelsey: Having a space we designed exactly how we want it, with everything brand new and furnishings exactly to our taste. It’s basically a brand new house. We are also so excited to have a big backyard and to be able to just walk outside easier now than in the condo we currently live in and have more room to have friends and family over.

JAI: Do you feel like the space reflects you and Peter and your style/lifstyle?

Kelsey: Yes so much! I have a more neutral/mountain style and Peter is more eclectic, but for the renovation part we really wanted to incorporate natural elements like wood finishes, actual wood beams, stone looking tiles, etc since we live in Colorado.  We will really make it our own with furniture. For example peters family runs a rug business in Chicago and we have a gorgeous bright red rug that will be the centerpiece of the living room and we will build around that.

Conclusion: Bringing Visions to Life with Julie Anne Interiors

At Julie Anne Interiors, our goal is to create spaces that reflect the unique needs and desires of our clients, and working with Kelsey and Peter on their 1950's Ranch home was a true pleasure. If you’re inspired by this transformation and have a project in mind, we’d love to help you bring your vision to life. Contact us today to start your journey toward your dream home!

Finding Interior Design in Napa: A Weekend Journey Through the Vineyards

Finding Interior Design Inspiration in Napa: A Weekend Journey Through Vineyards

This past weekend, I found myself wandering through the breathtaking vineyards of Napa Valley, a place where every corner seems to tell a story, and inspiration waits around every bend. As an interior designer, I often look for fresh ideas in unexpected places, and this trip to Napa was no exception. Visiting Ashes & Diamonds, Larkmead, and Saintsbury wasn’t just a delightful escape into some of the most beautiful wineries in California—it was a journey into the heart of design itself.

Ashes & Diamonds: Modern Minimalism Meets Timeless Elegance

Our first stop was Ashes & Diamonds, a winery that perfectly blends modern minimalism with a nod to mid-century design. Walking through the estate, I was struck by the clean lines, open spaces, and the way natural light plays with the architecture. The use of vibrant yet subtle colors, combined with sleek furnishings, creates an atmosphere of relaxed sophistication. This aesthetic can easily be translated into interior design by incorporating minimalist furniture with bold accent pieces, all within a neutral palette that allows natural light to be the star of the show.

For those looking to bring a touch of Ashes & Diamonds into their home, consider using mid-century modern furniture, complemented by large, airy windows that invite the outside in. Incorporate touches of gold or brass for a subtle yet impactful contrast, and don’t shy away from using plants as both a natural element and a design statement.

Larkmead: Heritage and Tradition in Every Detail

Next, we ventured to Larkmead, a vineyard steeped in history and tradition. The estate's timeless elegance is evident in its architecture and the thoughtful details that reflect its storied past. The use of rich woods, deep colors, and vintage elements creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that feels both luxurious and homey.

To bring Larkmead’s traditional charm into your home, think of rich textures and layered patterns. Use antique or vintage-inspired furniture pieces, and don’t be afraid to mix in some modern elements to keep the space feeling fresh. The key is to create a sense of history within your design—whether through carefully chosen antiques, heritage fabrics, or a curated collection of art that tells a story.

Saintsbury: A Rustic Retreat with a Modern Twist

Our final stop was Saintsbury, a vineyard that beautifully marries rustic charm with contemporary design. The estate’s use of reclaimed wood, exposed beams, and earthy tones creates a cozy, welcoming environment, while modern touches like sleek lighting fixtures and minimalist decor add a layer of sophistication.

To capture the essence of Saintsbury in your interior design, start with a foundation of natural materials—wood, stone, and metal. Layer in soft textiles like linen and wool to create warmth, and add modern accents such as geometric lighting or abstract art to keep the space feeling current. The goal is to create a space that feels grounded in nature, yet refined and stylish.

Bringing Napa's Vineyard Inspiration Home

As I reflect on this weekend in Napa, I’m reminded of how much our surroundings can influence our design choices. Whether it’s the clean lines and bright spaces of Ashes & Diamonds, the timeless elegance of Larkmead, or the rustic yet modern charm of Saintsbury, each vineyard offers a unique perspective that can inspire your home’s interior.

For your next design project, consider taking a cue from the vineyards of Napa. Let the beauty of nature, the richness of history, and the elegance of modern design come together to create a space that is as inspiring as the vineyards themselves.

Understanding Color Psychology in Interior Design

When it comes to interior design, color is one of the most powerful tools at your disposal. Not only does it set the tone for a room, but it also has a profound impact on our mood, emotions, and even behavior. This is where color psychology comes into play. By understanding the psychological effects of colors, you can create spaces that are not only visually appealing but also emotionally supportive and harmonious.

The Basics of Color Psychology

Color psychology is the study of how colors affect human behavior and emotions. Different colors can evoke different feelings and responses, making them a crucial element in interior design. Here’s a breakdown of some common colors and the psychological effects they typically have:

Transform Your Space: Why Hiring an Interior Designer is a Game Changer

Have you ever walked into a room and felt instantly at ease, inspired or simply awestruck? Often times that magic is the work of an interior designer. Whether you're renovating your home, redecorating a single room, or setting up a new office, the expertise of an interior designer can elevate your space. Here's why hiring an interior designer is not just a luxury but a smart, beneficial decision that can transform your space from a house into a home.

Interior designers bring a wealth of knowledge and a trained eye to your project. They understand design principles, color theory, and spatial arrangements. More importantly, they have the vision to see the potential in a space that you might overlook. This expertise ensures that every element in your space works harmoniously to create a cohesive, aesthetically pleaseing environment.

Designing a space can be overwhelming and time-consuiming. From choosing the right paint colors to coordinating furniture deliveries, the to-do list can seem endless. An interior designer manages all of these details, saving you countless hours and reducing stress. They handle the planning, scheduling, and coordination, allowing you to enjoy the process without the headaches.

While hiring an interior designer may seem like an added expense, it can actually save you money in the long run. Designers help you avoid costly mistakes, such as purchasing the wrong sized furntirue or choosing mismatched colors. Additioanlly, they have access to trade discounts and can source high-quality materials and furnihsings at better prices than you might find on your own.

Interior designers have established relationships with reliable contractors, craftsmen, and suppliers. These connections ensure that you recieve quality workmanship and materials. Whether you need a custom-built bookshelf or a unique piece of art, your designer can connect you with the right professionals to achieve your vision.

Everyone's lifestyle and tastes are different, and a good interior designer takes the time to understand your needs and preferences. They create a customized design plan that reflects your personality and enhances your daily life. Beyond aesthetics, they ensure that your space is functional and practical, tailored to how you live and work.

6. Attention to Detail

Design is all about the details, and interior designers excel at making sure every element is perfect. From the placement of lighting fixtures to the selection of textiles, they consider all the small things that come together to create a stunning final result. This attention to detail ensures a polished, professional look that is hard to achieve on your own.

7. Increased Home Value

A beautifully designed home not only enhances your quality of life but also adds value to your property. If you plan to sell your home in the future, professional design can make it more attractive to potential buyers and can even increase its market value. An interior designer's touch can turn your home into a desirable, must-have property.

8. Innovation and Creativity

Interior designers stay up-to-date with the latest trends, materials, and innovations in the design world. They bring fresh ideas and creative solutions to your project, ensuring your space is not only stylish but also innovative. Whether it’s incorporating sustainable materials or utilizing smart home technology, designers can integrate the latest advancements into your design.

9. Emotional and Psychological Benefits

Your surroundings significantly impact your mood and well-being. A well-designed space can reduce stress, increase productivity, and improve overall happiness. Interior designers understand the psychological effects of design elements and can create environments that promote positive emotions and well-being.

Final Thoughts

Hiring an interior designer is an investment in your space and yourself. Their expertise, resources, and creative vision can transform any area into a beautiful, functional, and personalized haven. Whether you’re looking to revamp a single room or undertake a complete home makeover, an interior designer can turn your dreams into reality. So why wait? Learning to Garden

This Spring has been the season of trying new things for me. If launching my own business wasn't enough new, I have also started to carve out time to learn new hobbies. In this season of life, I have been conserving energy for things I truly enjoy. And, with the career change, I noticed that I did not have a ton of hobbies outside of going to the gym, reading, drinking my favorite wines, and spending time with friends and family. Not that there is anything wrong with those activities but I was craving more diversity in my day-to-day activities. And, on top of that, I saw how much my husband loved his hobbies (skiing and mountain biking). It is truly his favorite thing to do on the weekends and he gets such a sense of joy and purpose. Dare I say I was a little jealous!

I feel like, as an adult, we are sometimes afraid to try something new and potentially fail at it. We tend to stick with activities that we are naturally good at or grew up doing. So its difficult to find the time to do the research and potentially the money to invest in something you might not like.

And speaking of failing, something I have notoriously been bad at is keeping my plants alive. However, I absolutely love plants and love using them in design so it felt critical that I learn more about them. So marrying my passion for interior design and my desire to develop a green thumb, I decided to take up gardening.

Since we were already in the process of revamping our backyard, I thought a raised garden bed could really help bring some greenery to the gravel on the side of our yard. We had two choices for garden beds, either build it ourselves or spend the money on buying one. And since we have limited storage in our house for tools, buying one felt more our speed even if it hurt the wallet. We bought the 3x8  natural cedar raised garden bed with trim from Eartheasy. Purchasing the not-so-cheap garden bed felt like a promise to myself to ensure this project was sucessful. Therefore, much more research was needed to understand what grows in Colorado, what can be planted in May, what can be planted together, etc. And boy is there a lot of conflicting opinions about everyting on the internet. But, I stumbled upon Nicole Burkes Instagram account @gardenaryco and decided to use her as my source of truth rather than trying to take advice from a million sources.

Now, we are almost 2 months into the gardening journey and the garden is absolutley thriving! It has been a lot of learn as you go like finding out you need to cut back alot of plants before they flower and knowing when to harvest. But, besides all the logistics and research, gardening has become something I look forward to every morning, similar to that first sip of coffee feeling. It is so lovely to wake up and head outside to water and observe the growth everyday. It has truly made me appreciate slowing down. Plus, it is such a lovely addition to the backyard!

Anyway, this is my long way of saying that I am grateful for my new hobby. If you are looking to learn to garden or just need help freshening up your backyard, please reach out to me!

A Non-Traditional Path to Interior Design

Figuring out what you want to do with your life might be one of the toughest tasks thrown at you in your early adulthood. Looking back at my own experiences, I am overwhelmed with how many people around me influenced me to go into healthcare (and more specifically, public health) when it was not something I was inherently interested in. But, as you can already tell, that didn't last long. Looking back now, I wish I took more time to think about what makes me happy instead of running the coorporate rat race and following the same road as everyone around me.

Let me back up and explain my background a little bit. I graduated from Gettysburg College in 2018 with a B.A. in Health Sciences and Public Policy. I entered college convinced I wanted to go to medical school, I had this idea that I was going to be a Doctor. And, to be honest, I think I made that decision because of the clout you receive when you say you want to study medicine and go to med school. I was extremely focused on success. Can you already tell how type A I am? However, somewhere during undergrad, I realized I was unbelievably squeamish and often passed out at the sight of needles. This put a wrinkle in my plan...

So, I pivoted (not to Interior Design) but to Public Health. And, when I graduated from college I decided to pursue a Masters in Public Health while simultaneously working in Washington, D.C. At the time, all seemed great. I liked my job enough, I had great friends and I was crushing it at school. I was doing everything I was suppose to do. And, I was getting rewarded for my hardwork. Did I love it? No. But, I was making good money and this path felt safe.

Then COVID happened and my then boyfriend (now husband) and I decided to move to Denver together to ultiamtely get more space and into nature. Right when I moved, a colleague reached out about a Denver based healthcare company hiring a Director-level role. I didn't think I had a shot but knew I had nothing to lose. So, I interviewed and to my complete surpise, I got the role. It was and still is one of the best moments in my career, I was so proud of myself. I couldn't believe I obtained a director-level role at 26 and this came with a huge pay increase. I was on cloud 9.

But, that story came to an end pretty quickly when I was laid off just about 9 months later. I was devasted but got back on the bandwagon and started applying immediately to new positions for healthcare startups and quickly found a new role. Looking back, I think this was the universe telling me to take a minute but I clearly didn't listen. I jumped into another director-level role but this time for a company that I didn't believe in. I was slowly getting antsty with the work and how the company was run. During the time I was there, I was miserable and I hated sitting at a desk all day. I was depressed at the idea that this could be the rest of my life...

Simultaneously, I was designing my home in Denver and loving the process. It was someting I truly enjoyed, I sat for hours looking at wall colors and fixtures and putting together the initial plans for our house. Over the course of six months or so, I began looking into interior design as a career path. And, on a very bad day at work, I applied to a few interior design studios in Denver and enrolled in an online Interior Design class at UCLA just to test the waters.

And, poof, my life changed. I absolutely loved the first class and knew this is what I really love to do. I love working with people, touching and feeling materials, putting together rooms, and making people see a space differently than they did before. And then, I heard back from a design studio about an administrative role and after many lengthy conversations with friends and family, I decided to take it. I put my two weeks notice in at the healthcare start up and made a massive career switch.

Everything began falling into place. I continued taking classes at UCLA to grow my interior design skill set and kept working at the interior design studio learning so much about the industry and process. After getting a handful of classes under my belt and almost a year at the studio, I decided to take a chance on myself and see if I could start an Interior Design buisness on my own. And, thats how Julie Anne Interiors came to be.

I am SO grateful for every friend, colleague, and family member that encouraged me to do this and for everyone who has supported this business in its infancy. I have so many ideas on where Julie Anne Interiors can go and have never felt so much joy and passion for working. I didn't think you could love a job but boy have I been proven wrong.

I am thankful for my background and this non-traditional path. For anyone out there thinking about a career change, I encourage you to bet on yourself. This business is something I am so proud of and I can't wait to see what happens in the next year!

Spring Cleaning

I always look forward to this time of year when the temperatures begin to peak over 70 degrees, the birds start chirping, and the farmers markets re-open. Something about the seasons changing from short, colder days to longer, sun-soaked days gives me a sense of warmth and excitement. Here, in Colorado, it's magical to watch the red rocks sprout fields of green grass, and trees come to life with flowers after everything looked so barren all winter.

With nature transforming and the city coming back to life, it's almost impossible to not feel inspired to get around to all the cleaning, organizing, and redesigning you put off all winter. In the past month, I have installed new shelving, (finally) designed and ordered everything for our laundry room, began landscaping and even splurged on new patio furniture. I have also began the dreaded task of going through every single closet and organizing. While tedious, it feels SO good to de-clutter and get rid of any and all junk that you have accumulated throughout the year. Everything in the house now has a dedicated spot and we have way less stuff just sitting about.

So, this is my reminder to you to let this season inspire you to transform your home! I have included a few tips and tricks below to help you get started with your spring cleaning:

The obvious place to begin your spring cleaning is in your own closet! Apologies if I sound like your mother, but how much of those clothes do you actually wear?! If it no longer fits you, if you haven't worn it in the past year, or if it's damaged, then you need to get rid of it! Get three trash bags out and label them 1. Damaged or Dirty Clothes, 2. High-End Clothes to Re-Sell and 3. Clothes to Donate. Anything damaged or dirty can get tossed, high-end clothes I encourage you to resell at local consignment shops and everything else can get donated to a local charity. This is also a great time to bin up your winter clothes and put them in storage for the warmer months. I find that every time I organize my closet, I find a greater appreciation for my wardrobe and have a way easier time putting together outfits!

Once your clothing closet is refreshed, its time to move on to the remaining closets in your house (this includes the pantry, the hallway entrance closet, etc). What can you toss? What can you donate? Do you have a good organization system? Consider purchasing a new shoe rack, more hangers, or bins and labels for extra storage. Make sure the items in each closet make sense in that location or should you move it to a different location? For example, we had our shoe rack in the front of the house but our garage is in the back of the house. So, for us, it made sense to add another shoe rack in the back of the house as well as an area to hang our jackets. Another great tip is to look at things that you rarely, if ever, grab. Can those items go into storage bins in the garage or in the attic? This may seem like a daunting task but it can completely transorm the spaces in your house and make you feel lighter and more organized headed into the warmer months!

For those who have kids or pets, consider donating toys that they have grown out of or no longer use. A great tool for staying organized is to use the one in, one out rule. For every new toy that is purchased or comes into the house, one has to go. I guarantee for a new toy or item, the kids will be able to identify something they can let go of. With our dog, we really try to get rid of her toys once they are destroyed and not buy her a ton of stuffed animals that end up all over our house since she prefers balls and puzzles.

Tis' the season to check all of those expiration labels. Go through the pantry, the fridge, and maybe even that garage freezer! This is an easy one to check off! Once your fridge is fresh, consider how you can better organize the spaces. Can everything have a place? What can you purchase to make everything more organized? And, if you're not sure - reach out ot me! Design and organization go hand in hand and I can happily help you with your spring cleaning.

Last, but not least, it is time to clean up that yard! If you have mulch, head to Home Depot to purchase a new layer and then, this sounds silly, fluff your mulch! Thank you, Mom, for teaching me this trick. And, if your grass looks a little dead, start your sprinklers up again and consider hiring someone to come out and de-thatch/aerate/fertilize your lawn so its ready for summer. The last thing to do is add color! Throw pillows and an outdoor rug can help spruce up your patio furniture. You can also add color by planting flowers or picking up pre-planted pots at your local plant nursery or Home Depot. A rule of thumb is to try to incorporate green, yellow, red, and blue into your lanscape - this combination really allows your yard to pop!

I encourage you to use the above as your spring cleaning checklist! How much can you complete before Memorial Day Weekend? For some this may be daunting! If so, please reach out to me at julie@julieanneinteriors.com and I would be happy to help you organize your spaces!

Vacations Inspired By Design

What makes a good vacation? Of course that list includes the activities, the people, the destination, and the quality of service. And, while all those things are important, I often think we underestimate how much design can enhance a vacation. A little extra research can pay off dividends! The colors, textures, smells and ambiance of the right hotel come together to make you feel inspired, renewed, and reenergized.

To help you plan your next vacation, I compiled a list of 10 of my favorite boutique hotels around the world. These hotels are thoughtfully designed; blending gorgeous interiors with the surrounding destination.

With limited lodging available on the French Polynesian Island of Moorea, Villa Ginette is a private haven of luxury. With four private bedrooms, you have the option of renting individual rooms or the entire villa. The villa comes with butler service and options to add a chef. My favorite design element is how the natural elements (e.g., thatched roof, mahogony floors and trim, stone, and natural linens) help ground you and welcome you to a place like no other. The blue lagoon, lush gardens and oceanfront dining further emphasizes a feeling of serenity.

Casa de Sierra Nevada, located in the fashionable city of San Miguel de Allende embodies both the European influences and Mexican history of the city. Blooming flowers, lush foliage and 17th and 18th centrury historic buildings make up this 37-room hotel. The hotel strikes the perfect balance of charming historical character with modern luxuries.

A well-kept secret on the west coast of Florida, The Gasparilla Inn transports you back to a simpler time period. The hotel balances bright colors, unique patterns and palms to embody the feelings of old Florida while still feeling modern. The Beach Club, recently redesigned, is absolutely stunning with playful motifs carved throughout the structure. I am partial since we got married here but it is the most stunning resort in Florida!!

Moab, Utah can only be described as otherworldly. Driving into the vast red rocks feels as if you just landed on Mars. Within this high dessert is the oasis of Sorrell River Ranch, with stunning red rock formations and the Colorado River surrounding the property. The authentic riverside escape has an array of georgeously built cabins that offer rich woods and leathers accented by rustic decor. The rugged yet upscale design sets the cozy mood for disconnecting from the busyness of everyday life.

Le Chateau Frontenac is the only hotel on this list that doesnt technically fall into a boutique hotel category. However, the experience at the hotel is so unique and the design is utterly breathtaking so I had to include it anyway! Perched on a promontory, the chateau holds breathtaking views of the St. Lawrence River and the fortified old city. Drinks in the circular bar, Bar 1608, is a must! Get there early to find a seat next to a window. Walking from the castle like structure through the old city feels like something out of a hallmark movie!

Simple, thoughtful, elegant are the three words that come to mind when I recall our stay at Hotel Yountville. This small, unassuming property from the outside packs in a punch. The Vintage House holds bungalow-style abodes tucked away in rich landscapes and greenery. It feels quintessially Napa while bringing in feelings of the Hamptons.

If you have yet to spend time in Lake George, now is the time to book a summer weekend getaway! Not only is the lake breathtaking but it's surrounded by rolling greens, qaint towns and even a few vineyards. The mere sight of this grand white hotel will make you stop in your tracks. The Colonial-Revival facade, victorian touches, and beautiful grounds are captivating.

While we haven't traveled here yet, it has been on my list for the next trip to Italy. However, my in-laws were lucky enough to stay on this property more than once and there is a reason they keep going back. Their wesbite describes the property best, "An ancient estate combining wild Umbrian countryside with effortless Italian style." Reschio is a thousand-year-old castle dating back to the 11th century that has been meticously restored to its original glory.

With the rising prices of America's bougiest ski resort, The Gant is a diamond in the rough. Prices in the shoulder seasons are incredibly reasonable, and when you combine it with the meticously kept condos and stocked kitchens, it makes this property even more desirable...to look at since you'll likely be dining at one of the fabulous restaurants on main street. Before heading to dinner, be sure to enjoy a cocktail on the modern mountain chic rooftop terrace.

This resort just underwent a complete makeover and reopened in late 2023. We have not had the chance to visit yet but it is high on our list of next visit destinations. This property, full of a rich history, is set amidst 81 acres along the Kahuwai Bay after being closed and untouched for a decade. The new design did not leave out a single element and draws on its surroundings unlike any other resort on the island. One of my absolute favorite design details is the Shripwreck Bar, an actual shipwreck that has been restored and turned into a one of a kind bar experience. The playfulness of this design brings a unique element to this hotel that isn't emulated elsewhere!

When traveling, I have heard people say, "I don't want to spend money on the hotel, we are just sleeping there." I encourage you to think of a hotel as more than just a place to sleep, but as a place to recharge and become inspired and that's worth spending on!

While I am not a travel agent, I have a serious case of wanderlust and love talking about beautifully designed destinations across the globe. Reach out if I can answer any questions at julie@julieanneinteriors.com
